As author Agatha Christie says, “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.” Mothers are the greatest gift for a child given by god. Mothers love their children unconditionally without asking for anything in return. They provide a healthy environment for their children and shape them into their better selves and become a better person. They are caretakers, mentors, risk-takers, and your best friend. No matter the situation you’re in, they will always be there for you and make sure you are safe. A mother’s love is the only kind of love that can’t be destroyed by someone or something. Thus, every mother’s way of showing love to their children can be different, some mothers might show affection physically through hugs and kisses, and some might show it through little actions like listening closely, making memories, cooking, and more. Alumna Wilson Chen (‘16) from AST discusses his own experience with ways his mother expressed her love to him.
Firstly, he believes that the biggest way his mother has shown love to him was through her generous amounts of forgiveness and tolerance she has towards him. Growing up his mother did not have a good temper, she was picky and fastidious with lots of matters that were around her. But whenever it came to Wilson, she had an unmeasurable amount of tolerance for him and was willing to forgive him for his actions, showing him that she cared for him, and was supportive of him. “She always had an infinite amount of forgiveness for me,” Wilson said.
Secondly, a way to feel the love of a mother is through physical affection, and for Wilson, it was through a small action that ensured him the love of his mother. A mother’s hardest moment is sending their child away to college, the feeling of leaving their children to face the wraiths of adulthood and independence can be frightening, and heart-aching. Looking back, Wilson remembered the look on his mother’s face when he was leaving for college. He was walking away, but when he looked back at his mother one last time, she was crying, but that didn’t matter, it was the way she looked at him that made him sure that his mother would do absolutely anything for him. It didn’t take many actions, it was the look, the warmth he felt at that moment, that proved the unconditional love his mother had for him. By all counts, a mother could show their love to her children in many different ways, some could be big and some could be small, but it isn’t about how big or how massive she shows love to her kids, it is about the way children receive it, and the way that it is shown, that makes a mother’s love true and genuine.
