Sushi: A Culinary Exploration

Makayla Yu (‘30), Feb. 9, 2024

Sushi is a Japanese food that most people think is healthy. It originated during the Edo period (18th century) and was created by a person named Hanaya Yohei. He opened the first sushi store in 1824 in Edo (present-day Tokyo). Taiwanese people also have many sushi shops.

One of Taiwan's famous sushi restaurants is Sushiro. Sushiro's logo features two red curves surrounding the name in the middle. It is a conveyor belt sushi store that sells many different kinds of sushi, both raw and cooked. The most popular sushi they offer is raw tuna sushi. Additionally, you can order ramen and other Japanese dishes there. My personal favorite is salmon sushi. It literally melts in your mouth. When you add wasabi to it, it gets even better, giving a spicy taste to the raw sushi. You should also explore other sushi shops and find your favorite sushi.

The reason why these sushi shops are so popular in Taiwan is that there was a time when Taiwan was ruled by the Japanese. The Japanese forced Taiwanese people to adopt their traditions and cuisine. Taiwanese people then realized that Japanese food was actually really good, which is why Japanese food is so popular in Taiwan.
