JAWS

Andrew Huang (’29) April 27, 2023

When you watch the movie “Jaws”, you might recognize a mysterious theme music written by John Williams (Aka. my favorite film composer). Although everyone knows that John Williams wrote this piece, it is actually copied. The very start of the piece is copied from the last movement Dvorak Symphony No.9. Other famous movements in this Symphony include the second movement “New World Symphony”. The first movement of the whole Symphony (which is written in sonata form) begins with a leitmotif (a melody that represents something/someone/somewhere/etc.) which had also been used in some of Dvorak’s later works. He also wrote something similar to the African-American spiritual “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”. The second movement is the well-known “New World Symphony”.

Because Dvorak was invited to America as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America, so he went to America and loved the place. He also wrote many American-related pieces in his life. Because of this, you can hear many melodies that sound similar to the American style. You can strongly hear this kind of style in this symphony, so the “New World” in “New World Symphony” is actually America. In this Movement, the English Horn played this beautiful melody accompanied by the string section. You can click the YouTube link down below to hear more. The version of the YouTube video is conducted by my favorite conductor: Gustavo Dudamel (who is also the conductor for the New Year concert in Vienna in 2017). The third movement is a scherzo. Also, this movement is influenced by a great poem called “The Song of Hiawatha”. The last and the most epic fourth movement (which is also written in sonata form), is my favorite. The very start of this movement is exactly what John Williams used for the “Jaws” theme song. After the introduction, the orchestra played the best Con Fuoco melody in the history of Symphony (at least for me). In this movement, Dvorak also recalled melodies that appeared throughout the Symphony. After the premiere of this symphony, this piece went around the world like crazy. People loved this piece, and that the fact the people loved this piece is still the truth in 2023.
